HCSO: Off-duty deputy was driver in fatal auto-ped accident

HOUSTON - The Harris County Sheriff's Office says an off-duty deputy was driving the vehicle that hit and killed a pedestrian walking in the HOV lane of the North Freeway early Tuesday morning.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in the inbound HOV lane between Richey Road and Airtex Drive.

The HOV lane, a left inbound mainlane and a left outbound shoulder lane were closed for nearly three hours while emergency crews responded to the auto-pedestrian accident.

The sheriff's office says the female deputy was not on duty at the time of the crash. She stopped and remained at the scene while authorities investigated what happened.

Commuters experienced stop and go traffic and delays up to an hour.

At one point, vehicles that were stuck in the HOV lane had to back up to the last HOV entrance in order to clear the lane.

METRO said the HOV lane inbound entrances at FM 1960 and Parramatta were also closed while authorities worked to clear the accident.

METRO police are leading the investigation.

No word yet on why the pedestrian was on the freeway or if any charges or citations will be issued.
