HBU opts out of campus carry bill

HBU to continue restricting carrying of firearms to licensed police officers

HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist University has opted out of Senate Bill 11, which allows people with a state handgun license to carry firearms on a college campus.

The university board of trustees unanimously approved President Robert B. Sloan's recommendation to opt out after considering opinions and input from the students, staff, faculty and community.

The university said it will continue implementing its current policy which restricts the carrying of firearms on campus to licensed police officers.

“At this time, the prudent course of action is to wait until all of the variables have been clarified," Sloan said. "Continuing our existing policy for the time being would seem to best serve the interests of this university.”
