HOUSTON - Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said he has added more weapons to the department.

Herman said he purchased 40 AR-15 rifles at a cost of $40,000. He said the money came from extra funds the department had saved over the previous year.

Herman said the guns will be used to better protect deputies and the public.

The deputy constables who will deal with the assault rifles have had training and are certified to carry the weapons, Herman said.

Herman said his goal is to purchase a total of 100 AR-15 rifles.
