Get Halloween candy for less

HOUSTON – Americans will spend an estimated $8 billion on Halloween costumes, decorations and candy this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

That's a lot of fun-size treats, so KPRC Local 2 went in search of sweet savings. We bought bags of chocolate candy bars and Tootsie Roll Pops at Target, Randalls, Walmart, Kroger and HEB.

Each store is advertising its own specials on specific brands and sizes of candy. Read carefully. Sometimes you only get the discount with a store card or if you buy several bags of the same size candy.

Randalls had the best deal on a small bag of snickers at $2 each for 19 fun-size bars. You do need a Remarkable card and you have to buy four bags for that low price. Otherwise, you'll pay $2.50.

We paid $2.50 at Kroger with a loyalty card. It was $2.68 for the same bag of candy at both WalMart and HEB.

If you want a bigger 30-piece bag of mixed candy bars, Walmart and HEB had the better deal. Both are charging $4.68 for 30 pieces. That adds up to about 16 cents for each snack-size bar. Target offered the bags of candy for $2 last week, but the price crept back up to $2.69 this week. For extra savings, look at Target's website for printable candy coupons.

HEB had the best price on a 10-ounce bag of Tootsie Roll Pops. It's $2 for about 20 pops.
