Gas station clerk knew Darren Goforth, suspected shooter Miles

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The Chevron station at the intersection of West and Telge roads is a popular spot for police officers to fill their patrol cars while on duty. Workers said it's not uncommon to see three or four police vehicles in the parking lot at one time.

"They always come here, we have good customer service," clerk Luis Garcia, who has worked at the Chevron for more than seven years, said.

Garcia got to know Goforth, a frequent customer who eventually became his friend.

"We would talk about our families," he said.

Garcia was working around 8 p.m. Friday when Goforth came in.
"It was just a normal night, like every other night," he said. "He came in to get a drink and was sitting right there in the chair."
Goforth sat for a few minutes in a row of chairs at the front of the store, he then got up to leave and was gunned down a few seconds later outside near pump No. 8.

Garcia didn't want to talk about what happened or what he saw but he did tell KPRC 2 the accused shooter, Shannon Miles, was also known in the area.
"He used to frequent this store once in a while," Garcia said. "He also used to go and get food from the restaurants down the street. He was quiet, he barely talked to us or smiled."
Opposite of how Goforth acted when he came in. Those who knew him said the married father of two was always smiling and making small talk and was a friendly fixture in the community who left a big impression on those he met.

The memorial for Goforthat the gas station is getting bigger and bigger and Garcia said he can't look at it without tearing up.

"He protected us every day," Garcia said. "He was doing a great job. I'm proud of him."
