Gas leak which prompted evacuations in Midtown is now contained

HOUSTON – A gas leak Thursday afternoon which prompted officials to evacuate residents in Midtown has been repaired, according to CenterPoint.

The leak was reported about 2:50 p.m. at the intersection of Genessee and Dennis streets.

Officials said construction crews were digging and working on the road when they struck a 4-inch gas line.

The gas line broke and vapors began to pour into the air, according to authorities.

Repairs to the pipe continue, but the gas is no longer leaking, CenterPoint said.

Firefighters said they had to evacuate residents from the area as a precaution, but residents are now allowed back into their homes.

Commuters were asked to avoid the immediate area.
