Fort Bend County sheriff discusses ICE program

RICHMOND, Texas – Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls on Wednesday discussed a commitment to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that 18 Texas sheriffs recently signed.

Nehls said his agency does not participate in the program, which is known as ICE 287g. He said the program allows his personnel to be trained in ICE detainment protocols. Once trained, those personnel can carry out some roles that are the responsibility of ICE.

Nehls said his agency has a good working relationship with ICE, and he sees no need to participate in the program.

The sheriff said that only a fraction of the 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country participate int he program.
