HOUSTON - Former President George H.W. Bush will be one of the recipients of the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

The announcement was made Thursday by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

Former President Bush is being recognized for the political courage he demonstrated while he was president and agreed to a 1990 budget compromise in spite of a 1988 campaign pledge not to raise taxes.  By doing so, the 41st president put his re-election prospects at risk.

The award will be presented by Jack Schlossberg, President Kennedy's grandson, at a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston on May 4.

Paul W. Bridges, former Mayor of Uvalda, Georgia, will also be recognized for political courage.

In 2011, Bridges joined a federal lawsuit filed by the ACLU to stop a law aimed at driving illegal immigrants out of Georgia.
