First female assistant drum major for Marine band honored at Alvin High School

ALVIN, Texas – Veterans, both past and present, were honored during a special ceremony being held at Alvin High School.

The ceremony started around 11:20 a.m. It is the fourth year this event has been held, and each year it gets bigger.

Eighty veterans from all branches of the military took part in the event.

The guest of honor at Monday’s ceremony was Gunnery Sgt. Stacie Crowther.

She is the U.S. Marine Corps’ first female assistant drum major in the history of “The President’s Own,” which is the Marine band in Washington, D.C.

Crowther is also a 1999 graduate of Alvin High School.

“I’m trying to do the same job that anybody who went before me did the job,” Crowther said about her position. “And because of who we are as Marines, I’m trying to do that job better than my predecessors did it, of course. Not just because I’m a woman or female in that role, but just because that’s how we all should approach the jobs that we have. Do it better than anybody else did it before you.”

Crowther said the best way to honor a veteran is to pick one person and learn their story and their sacrifice, and always remember to thank veterans.
