Firefighters relying on first responders for help after the storm

HOUSTON – They didn't know each other before today, but they are family and through devastation, they all came together.

"They've came here to help the firefighters here get their houses cleaned up and get them in shape to be restored," said Charles Womack, a retired Conroe Firefighter now living in Houston.

His home had nearly of feet of flood water inside, all the result of Hurricane Harvey.

"It was just high enough to ruin everything. Ruined the couches and beds and what have you," Womack said.

But in true firefighter fashion, crews from other parts of the state including San Antonio, Killeen and more all came to Houston to help out.

Some even came on their days off.

"When you show up and see houses just torn apart and the damage throughout the entire city, it really hits home at that point," said Roger Loredo, a San Antonio firefighter.

Although Womack lost quite a bit, including things that can never be replaced, he's thankful for what was saved, and his brotherhood of firefighters.

"I am totally blown away. These guys are guys are phenomenal, I'm telling you," Womack said.

"It's just something that you really don't think twice. You get the opportunity to do it, you show up and do it," Loredo said.

Although the road to recovery will certainly prove long, Womack is now well on his way.
