Father's Day special for many employees of United Airlines

HOUSTON - Father's Day is a special holiday for many dads who work for United Airlines at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

There are more than 16,000 United employees in Houston, many of whom have some type of father-son or father-daughter relationship.

Captain John Walker and his pilot son, Brad, not only fly planes for the same company but sometimes even fly Boeing 737's together at times. Captain Walker is 53 years old and has been flying for United for 27 years.

His son, Brad, just started with the company about one year ago.

"There are a lot of other great airlines out there. Having grown up seeing Continental, now United, it was definitely top of my list especially with the opportunity to fly with my dad," Brad said.

John said, "It's absolutely fabulous, especially when we do get to fly together it's just...there's a since of pride and very rewarding to be able to enjoy that time together."

It's not just father-son and father-daughter pairings on the plane either, there are several groups that work below the wing as well.

Alex Cedeno and his son, Alex, are both ramp agents who work to load and unload luggage and packages from the planes.

Alex Jr. is 32 years old and started with the airline 10 years ago. His father has been an employee here for 20 years.

"I think it's a wonderful experience because if I don't catch my dad outside of work, we can always meet at work and have lunch together," Alex Jr. said.

Part of the business people don't often see is over in the hangars or maintenance department.

Victor Ruiz started with Continental back in 1987. Since then he brought two of his children onboard to work with him in the maintenance department.

"It's a pleasure and it's an honor just to know that they followed into my footsteps at such a great company as United," Ruiz told Local 2.

Meanwhile, others who work at IAH say they too want to pass along the family tradition to their families in the future.
