Father shot, killed at home near 3 children

Police believe victim knew the shooter

HOUSTON - Houston police are interviewing anyone who may have information about the death of a father of three.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Friday at a home on Portsmouth Street near Hazard Street.

Alex Borton said she didn't hear gunshots, but saw police and crime tape surround her neighbor's home.

"We didn't hear anything until police started showing up and people were running around," said Borton. "It was scary."

Houston police said 35-year-old Ashley Rowell, a former owner of Duff Beer Distribution, based in Pasadena, was shot to death.

"They were with the children, and there was some kind of knock or door bell ringing," said Sgt. Brian Harris. "He opened up the door and was shot in the doorway."

Police said Rowell's wife and three children were home, along with two other children who were sleeping over.

Investigators said they might have seen him lying lifeless in the home. Rowell's wife and 8-year-old son called 911.

Neighbors, friends and colleagues said they were remembering Rowell as a kind and a nice man. Rowell's brother-in-law is an HPD officer who responded to the scene.

Police said they believe this was not a random shooting.

"We can never be completely sure, but all indications are is that this going to be some type of scene where assailant knew the victim," said Harris.

Police said they have suspects, but no arrests have been made. They may be members of the family.

According to police, one of victim's family members was suing Rowell because they felt like they weren't getting their fair share of money.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
