Father records speeding drivers in child's school zone

RICHMOND, Texas – A parent at Hutchinson Elementary School documented speeding in the school zone in dozens of videos over four years because the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office won’t do anything about the problem.

“Fifty-five mph! On his cellphone!” said Cass Mattison in his latest video, while he holds a radar gun pointed at a pickup truck. “Are you kidding me?”

“It’s nonstop, a.m. and p.m.,” Mattison told KPRC. “It’s just a thing that happens every day, Monday through Friday, through that school zone.”

Mattison, a former police officer and current safety engineer, works two weeks on, two weeks off. He started watching the school zone when his son, Ashton, started kindergarten.

He kept record of emails he sent to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. Once, in 2016, Sheriff Troy Nehls responded, promising to send help.

It lasted two days, Mattison said.

The Sheriff’s Office is 2 miles away from the elementary school.

“That should be a No. 1 priority to them is children and school zone safety, and being as close as they are, should be something that they can handle,” Mattison said.

KPRC contacted the Sheriff’s Office after hours and has not heard back. We will update this story when the office responds.
