Family makes plea to driver who didn't stop after killing man

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Family and friends are making a desperate plea to the driver responsible for taking the life of a young father.

Michael Hayn, 29, of Fort Bend County, was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a car whose driver did not stop after the collision.
He leaves behind a 2-year-old son.

Hayn's death is a deep loss to his friends and family, including his cousin Sara Minton.

"He had a great heart. Always cared about people," said Minton. "I mean, I don't know anybody who wasn't friends with him."

Investigators with the Houston Police Department said Hayn and a group of friends had been riding their motorcycles around 3 a.m. Sunday when they pulled over on the left northbound shoulder of I-610 near Gellhorn in east Houston to check one of the bikes for engine trouble.

That's when, they said, a maroon car  crossed onto the shoulder, hit Hayn as well as two motorcycles and kept going.

The impact threw Hayn across the median into the southbound lanes, where he was pronounced dead.

"You killed somebody and you left and you didn't even care about my cousin," says Minton. "You just left him on the road."

The fatal hit-and-run has also left a host of relatives, friends and loved ones asking the person responsible to turn himself or herself in to ease their pain.

"If this person can surrender, at least we know this person won't make a stupid mistake again and hurt another family," Minton says.

Police say the driver who killed Hayn was in a maroon car -- possibly a Honda sedan -- that has significant damage to its front left side.

Anyone with information should contact the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
