HOUSTON - The family of a 4-year-old boy who shot and killed himself Sunday is asking for help with funeral expenses.

Authorities said Codrick McCall found a gun underneath a bed in a home where he had been staying the last six months.

The McCall family set up the Codrick McCall Jr. Fund.

"We are just trying to understand everything right now," grandmother Sharron McCall said.

Somewhat similar, but unrelated incidents involving children and guns both preceded and followed Codrick's death.

The trio of heartbreaking mishaps, two of them fatal, prompted a press conference by Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

"For the sake of a young life to fulfill the opportunity, please practice every safety measure you can," he said.

According to a study published last year by Everytown.org, about 33 percent of American children live in homes with guns. Forty-three percent of those homes have at least one unlocked gun.
