Fake Utility Worker Steals Purse

GALVESTON, Texas - A thief posing as a utility worker targeted a Galveston resident Sunday, police said.

Galveston police said a man claiming to be working on a water pipe got into a home and stole a woman's purse.

The man was described as black, 30 to 40 years old and very thin. He was last seen wearing a ball cap and work clothes.

Detectives said the incident was similar to others that happened in late 2010. In those incidents, a man impersonated electric company workers, police said.

Galveston police offered the following tips to determine whether someone is a city worker:

  • City of Galveston workers do not enter private residences.
  • City of Galveston workers carry official identification.
  • City of Galveston workers wear official uniforms.
  • City of Galveston workers travel in marked city vehicles.

Any city utility work may be verified by calling the Public Works Department at 409-797-3630.
