Elderly couple arrives home to find intruder

Neighborhood helps police find suspect

HOUSTON - An elderly couple came home Friday to find an intruder inside their home, deputies said.

Harris County Constable Pct. 4 investigators said William Blackburn kicked the front door in and was armed with a knife when he came face to face with the couple inside the home on the 14200 block of Barrone.

Startled by the couple's arrival, deputies said Blackburn, 33, quickly ran out of the house. Luckily, several neighbors were outside when it happened and rushed to help.

"The (homeowner) came out and said, 'Somebody help,'" neighbor Alfred Lopez said. "We started chasing the guy and eventually the whole neighborhood started following them and chasing them all the way down the street."

After a 30 minute manhunt, deputies, along with their canine units, found Blackburn hiding out a few blocks away.

"The neighborhood actually came together very well," Harris County Constable Pct. 4 Sgt. Brent Combs said. "We had several citizens that called in saying they had a male jump into their back fence. We had people kind of leading us in the right direction which way he was going. So that actually helped."

Neighbors said whole ordeal has brought the neighborhood closer together.

"It's scary that (he) did it in broad daylight," Lopez said. "But we got to know some new neighbors, which is good, so we can help everybody out."

William Blackburn was charged with burglary of a habitation.
