The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor update shows slight improvement to the drought in southeast Texas.  In the past week, the Houston area has improved from "extreme" status to "severe" status.

Soaking rains totaling 2 inches in many places around town on Tuesday, April 2, account for much of the improvement.

Another soaking a week later, in the wee hours of the morning on April 11, helped matters, too.  The most recent update to the drought monitor, however, only includes rainfall through April 9, so the effects of that last soaking will show up on the drought monitor update next week.

While a couple of heavy rainfall events in the past couple of weeks is welcome news, if the trend doesn't continue long-term we'll quickly find ourselves right back in an extreme drought just as the hottest months of the year approach.
