HOUSTON - Police are investigating what led to a driver losing control and causing a deadly accident in southeast Houston.

It happened Friday around around 10:20 p.m. on the Gulf Freeway near Farm Road 519.

According to Houston police, a red car was speeding southbound on the Gulf Freeway, when for unknown reasons the driver lost control.

The car struck the guardrail and then slammed into a Transtar camera pole, knocking the huge metal pole down across the freeway.

A pickup truck driver was then unable to avoid the pole and ran into it.

The driver of the red car was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck had a broken arm after the crash and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police are investigating  whether alcohol consumption was a factor.
