Dog treats recalled over salmonella concerns

HOUSTON - Nature's Recipe is voluntarily recalling some of its dog treats because of the potential of salmonella contamination.

The concern is both dogs and owners who handled the treats could become sick.

The company is recalling it's "Nature's Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken." The dog treats come in a resalable pouch and are made in the United States.

"Salmonella can cause a life-threatening illness for both animals and humans," said Dr. Michelle Withrow, a veterinarian at Voss Road Animal Clinic in Houston. "You'll see diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy. We definitely want to take the appropriate precautions to be looking for signs of the illness."

So far, Withrow hasn't seen any dogs sick from the treats.

Nature's Recipe and the FDA both said they have not received reports of the affected animals or owners either. The company said the recall was ordered as a precautionary measure.

"Potentially it could be a large issue, but I wouldn't expect it to be," said Withrow. "But I definitely recommend if customers have treats that they don't use them."

The treats affected were sold in 19-ounce stand-up pouches and have "Best If Used By" dates of 10/11/13 and 10/12/13. Customers who bought affected treats should stop using them and throw them away.
