Accused drunken driver arrested after 1 killed, injured 11 in 5-vehicle crash

HOUSTON – A suspected drunken driver has been arrested and charged in a 5-vehicle accident that killed one person and injured 11 people on 59 Southwest Freeway, police said.

The accident was reported at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at 6144 Southwest Freeway.

Houston police said Victor Manuel Garcia, 48, was driving a black Dodge Durango in the wrong direction on the Southwest Freeway and sideswiped a black Toyota Scion TC before striking a white Chevrolet Tahoe head-on. Police said the Tahoe was hit again by a blue Honda CRV and the driver of the Scion lost control and was struck head-on by a white Chevrolet Impala.

Police said the driver of the Tahoe, a 34-year-old woman, was critically injured. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Eleven others injured in the crash, including a 3-year-old girl, were taken to local hospitals. 

Garcia is charged with intoxication manslaughter.
