Daughter forced to take STAAR test, mother says

HOUSTON – Jessica Healy's 12-year-old daughter suffers from anxiety, so bad it causes health concerns.

It's also the reason Healy opted her daughter out of taking a portion of the STARR test.

Jessica Healy, a concerned mother said, "I've had many conversations with the principal at the school and told her, look she's stressed."

So imagine this mother's frustration, after learning her daughter ended up taking the test.

She says she was bullied to do so by teachers and administrators at Collins Intermediate.

Healy said, "It's a gross overreach of authority to tell a child to deliberately disobey their parent.  It made me feel angry and violated as a parent."

Her daughter said, "To be honest I felt like crying because I didn't know what to do in that situation. When they kept telling me to do it and my mom told me I wasn't supposed to do it."

Despite her mother's instructions and assurance from the principal through exchanged emails, her daughter bounced from room to room to take the test, and was not allowed to call her mom.

"I asked if I could my mom a couple of times, like four times and they said kept saying 'no, it's OK, you really don't need to call your mom,'" said her daughter.

Now, this upset mother is planning to meet with school officials

"It makes me sad. And if it's happening to her, it has to be happening to other kids and it has to stop," explained Healy.

The Conroe Independent School District released a statement Thursday saying," Administrators have reached out to the parent (and) have scheduled a meeting. We encourage all parents to contact their child's campus with any questions, concerns or suggestions so we can work together to create the best learning environment for all students."
