Caregiver accused of stealing cancer patient's life savings

Narjis Lee charged with theft

HOUSTON - A caregiver has been accused of stealing from an elderly patient.

Narjis Lee, 36, has been charged with theft.

Houston police said Lee snatched $42,000 from an 83-year-old cancer patient she was caring for on the weekends.

The investigation started back in July after money went missing from the victim's home along Palmer Street in southeast Houston.

Police said Lee took the victim's life savings, which she kept in an envelope inside of her pillowcase.

According to court records, Lee found the hidden money when she decided to move the victim to the sofa from her bed in order to change the sheets.

Detectives said Lee started acting strangely shortly after she took the cash and told the victim she had to leave early because she wasn't feeling well.

The victim felt something wasn't right, so police said she checked her pillowcase only to find her money was gone and the envelope was stuffed with random pieces of paper.

When interviewed, investigators said Lee denied any wrongdoing. Shortly after that interview, Lee disappeared and hasn't been seen since, officials said.

Anyone with information regarding Lee's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
