HOUSTON - Crews worked Monday to cap a gas leak in southeast Houston.
Houston firefighters said the leak happened in a 16-inch line along Sidney near Dupont about 4:30 a.m.
People who work at some businesses in the area reported a foul smell. Four homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.
Fire department officials said the gas line feeds into the Texas Medical Center, but the impact the leak may have on that area was not yet known.
CenterPoint Energy officials said two valves along the line were shut off about 10:15 a.m., but the location of the break had not yet been determined. Officials said it may take all day to make repairs.
The cause of the leak is under investigation.
