Consumer warning: Impersonators soliciting money over the phone

Headline Goes Here

The Harris County Sheriff's Office issued a warning Friday about impersonators posing as law enforcement officers collecting debts.

According to investigators, the fake deputy threatens callers by saying they'll go to jail if the debt is not paid.

When the impersonator calls back, deputies said the caller is asked to purchase pre-paid gift cards.

In some cases, investigators said the impersonator falsely claimed to be Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

If you feel you have been a victim of such a crime, contact the Better Business Bureau or call your local law enforcement agency. The Harris County Sheriff's Office's non-emergency number is 713-221-6000.
