Rep. Al Green calls for impeachment of President Trump

HOUSTON – U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Houston, has called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

In a news conference Monday morning, Green said the president obstructed the investigation of his election campaign’s ties to Russia during the 2016 presidential election. This accusation came after Trump fired former FBI director James Comey, who was overseeing the investigation to determine if the president’s election campaign had any Russian influence.

The congressman called the act impeachable.

“President Trump is not above the law,” said Green. “He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged. To do otherwise would cause some Americans to lose respect for, and obedience to, our societal norms.”

Green said other acts by the president, including acknowledging that he considered the investigation when he fired Comey and that he tweeted, “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press,” merit an impeachment charge by the U.S. House.

“Whether he is guilty is a separate action for the U.S. Senate to decide,” said Green.

Green also said lawmakers will respond if the public weighs in by demanding that the president be charged by way of impeachment.
