The religious holiday is celebrated by going to church, visiting friends and family, holding Easter egg hunts and sharing special meals and desserts.

U.S. consumers are expected to spend billions of dollars on sweet treats, clothing and decorations to celebrate this Easter holiday.

According to the National Retail Federation, this year, Americans will spend $18.4 billion for Easter festivities, and that number is “up 6 percent over last year’s record $17.3 billion and a new all-time high in the survey’s 14-year history.”

Speaking of sweet treats for Easter, the staff at Houston’s popular Mexican bakery, “El Bolillo,” is preparing for the holiday.

One of the bakery’s highly-demanded desserts, the “Tres Leches” cake, is a favorite among customers for Easter.

"The Tres Leches cake is really what we're known for," said owner Kirk Michaelis.

The Tres Leches cake, or “three milks bread,” is a sweet and moist vanilla sponge cake soaked in three types of milk and layered with whip cream and fruit.

"It's amazing. The flavor is just wonderful. It doesn't get much better," Michaelis said. "We'll make over a thousand cakes easily this week and weekend."

El Bolillo makes the famous cake for every occasion, including for weddings and of course, Easter.

Michaelis owns two locations and plans to open a third in Pasadena later this spring.

He says he opened the first location 20 years ago.

"I had some restaurants and when I got out of the restaurant business, I opened up some donut and kolache shops," he said. "My employees started making some sweet bread, some 'pan dulce,' some 'conchas,' some 'empanadas' with the dough we had and it started selling.

"I took my father-in-law down to Mexico and we visited some bakeries and came back and opened up the first 'El Bolillo' about 1998 in the Heights and it grew."
