Click2Daily: Teacher Appreciation Week spans entire month for one school

HOUSTON – While we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, Elrod Elementary School in the HISD is devoted the entire month to honor its teachers.

"I try to go all out for them," said principal Leigha Curry. "I just want them to know how much I respect them and appreciate what they do for our kids every day.

Each day Curry lays out a different theme for her teachers. Wednesday's theme was "Bar None," a play on words with a core principle the school follows, which means they strive to be the best, bar none.

"Every day I wanted to give them a different bar setup so today they have a soup and salad bar," Curry said.

She also provides a different "mocktail" each day, simulating happy hour and a wheel to spin so teachers can win various prizes.

"I feel very appreciated," said Mitra Hopkins, a kindergarten dual language teacher.

This year, Curry awarded Hopkins with the Elrod "Teacher of the year" award.

"It's been my passion all my life to be a teacher. My mom was a teacher and so she instilled in me that I needed to learn and I wanted to pass it on to my future," Hopkins said.

"She's the best teacher," said student Jayden Rylander. "I like that she teaches us how to read."

Elrod is an emerging medical scholars school which is why faculty members wear hospital scrubs. They're hoping students will find a path in the medical field.
