CLEAR LAKE, Texas – It was a packed church gym with tempers flaring at times for during a Clear Lake community meeting.
Many were wearing red to show their opposition to any potential homeless center in their neighborhood.
Angela Mitchell, who is against the idea of the possible shelter location said, "The community is going to fight it all the way."
Jai Labrie is the person looking to open the shelter.
The proposed site is in a busy part of town in what used to be an old restaurant.
Jai Labrie, who is hoping to open a homeless shelter in the Clear Lake Area said, "I see the need that we have. I see the homeless that we have or on the corners and I want to be able to offer a solution."
But a major concern expressed by residents, the possible location that many take issue with.
Dusty Martin, who is against the potential shelter's location explained, "I can't see it being feasible. My kids elementary school is five blocks away from that place."
So far, Labrie says she hasn't gotten any permits to open just yet but adds she's been moving forward in hopes of doing so.
"I know that we need to build and present an opportunity in that spot for these men and women because this is where they're already at," Labrie said.
"There is such a need. You see these people on the streets and people around here want to pretend like they're not there," Shelby Jones said.
Many admitted their minds won't be changing anytime soon.
"I'm very involved in this community and there's no one person that is for this," said Mitchell.
