City looks to ease downtown Houston parking woes

About 120 parking signs are posted downtown

HOUSTON - Anytime you head to downtown Houston, parking can be an issue. And with dozens of different "no parking" signs, it can also be confusing.

There are about 120 different signs in the downtown area telling you where and when you can park. It's so confusing that some drivers are too nervous to park downtown because they're afraid of getting a ticket.

City leaders are taking notice and are trying to do something about it.

Over the next year there will be fewer parking signs, and the ones that are posted will be more uniform.

"The goal is to have people be comfortable coming downtown knowing where they can park and not having a nasty surprise with their car being towed," said Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

The mayor stresses that consistency is important.

City crews will go street by street replacing the old signs with the new ones.

Street curbs will also be painted to alert drivers they may be parking in a no-parking zone.
