Child sex assault suspect surrenders to police

Teacher, school administrators accused of not reporting sex assault

LA MARQUE, Texas - A man accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl turned himself in on Tuesday.

Derrick Reed, 29, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault.

"They're false, man," Reed said when he surrendered. "Anyone that knows me knows they are false."

Reed posted $40,000 bond and walked out of jail about 30 minutes after he arrived.

Detectives did not release details about the alleged rape.

Three educators were also charged in connection with the case. Two school administrators and a teacher were accused of not reporting the alleged crime.

Mainland Preparatory Academy teacher Rasyshandra Ashton, 29, and administrators Wilma Green, 67, and Diane Merchant, 58, have been charged with misdemeanor failure to report child abuse.

Investigators said the three waited 20 days to contact authorities after learning that the student may have been the victim of a sexual assault.

State law requires teachers and administrators to make a report to the police within 48 hours of learning about possible child abuse.

Mainland Preparatory Academy, 319 Neuman Road, is a charter school for students in pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade.

If convicted, each woman could face a year and jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000.
