Child accidentally shot in arm, leg at SW Houston apartment, police say

HOUSTON – Authorities are investigating after a child was accidentally shot in the arm and leg Tuesday at an apartment in southwest Houston, according to police.

The 9-year-old child was shot around 6 p.m. in the 8000 block of Boone Road.

The child was taken to the hospital and is now listed in stable condition.

Authorities are still unsure how the gun went off, but did say that a 19-year-old relative was also at the apartment at the time of the shooting.

On the scene, police were seen placing a person in handcuffs who was later taken away in the back of a patrol unit.

A neighbor said he heard a single gunshot and then the chaos that followed.

"They were screaming a lot, the kid's grandmother she came home and screaming asking what had happened to her grandson. Asking if someone had shot him, and then other families let her know that he had shot himself," Eric Williams said.

Police did not say if anyone was formally arrested and their investigation remains ongoing.
