Ceremony held for renaming of HPD headquarters in honor of retired officer

HOUSTON - HPD Chief Charles A. McClelland Jr. and Mayor Annise Parker held a formal ceremony renaming the HPD Headquarters building in honor of retired senior police Officer Edward A. Thomas.

The headquarters building at 1200 Travis in downtown Houston will be renamed the Houston Police Department Edward A. Thomas Building, and there was a short celebration honoring Thomas' 63 years of exemplary service and dedication to the department.

Thomas' more than six decades of service and courage paved the way for African-American and minority officers at the Houston Police Department. He received numerous awards, commendations and letters of appreciation and was one of the first black police officers to integrate into HPD.
