Caught on camera: Student fed up with bullying fights back

PASADENA, Texas - Two students were caught exchanging punches inside a junior high school locker room; the incident was recorded on a cell phone camera by another student.

"I told Michael 'you need to fight back, you need to protect yourself anyway you can,'" said Tracy Gomez, one of the boys' mothers.

Gomez said the trouble began last year. The boys attend Deep Water Junior High School in Pasadena.  She said her son was being picked on, it continued through the summer and started up again this year.

"He was telling me he was scared to come to school.  He was scared to come because he knew these kids would be bullying him," Gomez said.

She told Local 2 her son had several pair of glasses broken and would often come home with bruises and scrapes.

"They've broken his glasses and bloodied his nose," she said.

At the end of his rope, Gomez said her son got fed up and took matters into his own hands and confronted one of the bullies in the locker room during school.

"I don't believe it should have got to this point where a child gets fed up with being bullied and has to take it into their own hands," said Gomez.

Gomez said she had reported the problems to teachers, coaches and other staff members but a Deer Park Independent School District spokesperson told Local 2 this was the first time the school's principal had heard about it.

The spokesperson said the district takes allegations of bullying very seriously and it isn't tolerated.  The issue was resolved and both students were disciplined for the fight.

Gomez had a meeting at the school with the principal and the other student's mother, she is hopeful the bullying will now stop.

"I don't see why it took so long to do anything.  I hope after today it's resolved," Gomez said.
