Caretaker charged for stealing from elderly couple, officials said

FORT BEND, Texas – A caretaker who is now in custody took advantage of an elderly couple, officials said.

Eula Mae Williams, 44, from Missouri City, was originally sentenced to five years of probation, but her charge was enhanced to prison time ranging from 2 to 10 years because her victims were elderly, according to authorities.

In 2014, Williams was the caretaker for 92-year-old Mr. Spritzer, who was a Holocaust survivor.

Mrs. Spritzer said she noticed jewelry, cash and crystal went missing whenever Williams would come over to take care of her late husband.

Williams denied stealing from the Spritzers, but when investigators found pawnshop transactions for two stolen rings in Williams’s name, she was arrested, investigators said.

“This was a crime about greed and broken trust.  The defendant was a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Fort Bend Assistant District Attorney Lesleigh Morton.

“Unfortunately, predators like Williams exist – who prey upon the sick, the weak and the old.  Instead of being nurturing and comforting, the defendant was robbing a sick, 92-year-old man of the sentimental possessions he wanted to hand down to his family.”

The Fort Bend District Attorney’s office said Williams will serve 45 days in jail as a condition of her probation, perform 120 hours of community service and pay restitution to her victim.

Officials said that if Williams fails to abide by the conditions of her probation, she can be sentenced to 10 years of prison time.

“There is a reason why state law allows for theft to be enhanced to a higher degree of punishment when the victim is elderly, and that is because the elderly tend to be easier prey on and, therefore, more vulnerable,” added Morton.
