HOUSTON – Austin is apparently bidding bon voyage to Columbus Day.

The municipal government Twitter account tweeted the announcement Thursday, citing the approval of a resolution that would recognize the second Monday of every October -- Columbus Day nationally -- as Indigenous People’s Day in the Austin city limits.

As one news outlet reported, city and state governments have taken steps to recognize the day for those who were living in the Americas before Christopher Columbus’ expedition.

In response, one person, KB, wrote, “Congrats. Now please get back to work dealing with our high property taxes and cost of living issues. Thanks.”

Another wrote, “Naw, that’s Columbus Day.”
