By the numbers: Astros World Series parade breaks several METRO records

HOUSTON – The Houston Astros and the city of Houston hosted an epic World Series Parade in downtown Houston last Friday.

The parade route had to be extended to help accommodate the mass of people wanting to catch a glimpse of the team and the trophy.

With that many people moving around in downtown, METRO experienced a record day.

"We used every train. Those trains were running 4 1/2 to 6 minutes. You can't really run them any more than that by the infrastructure that was built," METRO CEO Tom Lambert said.

What lessons were learned in case we get an Astros repeat?

"Put some buses where we could get more people. Park right next to the trains. Make Main Street a pedestrian street so you can move more people," Lambert said.

And for the people who didn't make it to the parade?

"I talked to customers that day who were very sad, and I do feel bad, but the bottom line is that we carried a lot of people," Lambert said.

Here's a look at some of the numbers:

395,000

METRO officials said that between the rail and buses, they set a new record for single-day ridership.

125,000

The Red, Green and Purple METRORail lines reported a combined 125,000 boardings, which broke the previous record (set the day before the Super Bowl) by 16,000.

270,000

Local bus and Park & Ride boardings cracked the quarter-million mark.

5,000

METRO officials said their customer service team fielded nearly double the amount of calls they field on a typical Friday.

750,000 - 1 million

The estimated amount of people who were downtown for the parade.
