Boy remains in state custody after witnessing murder-suicide

An 8-year-old boy who deputies said witnessed a murder-suicide last Tuesday will remain in state custody, but stay with relatives in Fort Bend County.

Family members in Ethiopia were also seeking permanent custody of the boy.

Deputies said the boy's father Ali Edris, 58, shot and killed the boy's mother, Sofya Ali, 33. They said the father then killed his other son, Edris Edris, 24, before killing himself.

Deputies said the young boy witnessed it all.

Authorities have started the long process to find the best home for him.

"What we're working on talking to the family. We understand there may be other family who's interested in taking permanent custody of the child as well so we're looking into everyone. Always do background checks. We check out the home and just make sure they understand the responsibility,” said Tiffani Butler, with the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.

State representatives said the boy is doing as well as can be expected and will start counseling soon.

They said it could take up to a year to determine where he'll go permanently.
