Boy recovering after foot severed by train

HOUSTON - A 9-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after a train ran over his leg over the weekend.

Daniel Ndayishimite, who lost a foot and part of his leg, is out of surgery.

The accident happened east of downtown Houston after Daniel finished playing with friends.

He tried to climb onto a train car instead of waiting for it to safely pass, according to his sister.

Daniel was near the Runnels Street crossing when he slipped and fell.  His foot was run over and severed by the wheel of a moving train car.  It was not clear how fast the train was going.

Daniel was conscious after surgery Sunday at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital.

He will stay in the hospital another week or so recovering.

He will live to tell the tale himself of exactly what happened. But for now, he is just starting a long road to a second chance.
