Beyonce kicks off Formation World Tour in Houston Saturday night

Beyonce thanks hometown Houston during show

HOUSTON – Houston's hometown girl Beyonce spent this Mother's Day weekend at home.

But this was no ordinary "Mama, I'm home for the weekend" visit. Instead, the Queen Bey spent nearly two hours performing in front of a sold-out crowd at NRG stadium Saturday night as part of the first leg of her Formation World Tour.

Around 8:30 p.m., DJ Khaled took to the stage to hype up the crowd. Performing his hits, including crowd-favorite "All I Do Is Win," DJ Khaled then took the fans on a musical journey of sorts by playing crowd favorites from other rappers, including Jay Z and Biggie as the crowd sang and danced along.

Ever the gracious host, Beyonce shared her spotlight with Houston rappers Slim Thug and Paul Wall, who also performed with DJ Khaled before her performance began.

And then around 9:10 p.m., Beyonce hit the stage, immediately getting the crowd "in formation" with her hit song "Formation."

Her set continued with several other hits from the Lemonade album. For "Daddy's Lessons," she danced onto stage in a beautiful white fur coat, white hat, white bodysuit and white boots: an appropriate outfit for an ode that pays homage to her father, as much as it does to her Texas roots.

And proving no matter how big her star gets, Houston will always be home and in her heart, Beyonce took a moment to give the audience a heartfelt thank you.

"I'm home," she said as she told the crowd there was no place in the world like her hometown, Houston.

For her classic hit "Crazy In Love," Beyonce served up a sultry version of the popular song.

Other highlights of the show were the heartfelt and emotional performances of "Me, Myself & I" as well as "1+1."

And again, ever gracious to share her spotlight, Beyonce gave fans a moment to pay tribute to Prince. As "Purple Rain" played, lights glowed from fans' cellphones as the crowd sang along in honor of the dead superstar.

For "Freedom" Beyonce and her dancers performed in a shallow pool of water, as they danced and stomped along to the thunderous beat. Then, as if an almost angelic presence, Beyonce performed her classic "Halo."

The show itself is filled with beautiful imagery and sound from her "Lemonade" visual album, as well as a mix of pyrotechnics. During the show, an old home video of a teenage Beyonce plays. She's introducing herself and admits at times she can give "attitude," but quickly noted that when it happens, someone should just "slap it out of her." She's come so far from the 16-year-old Beyonce in the home video.

These days, she's a grown woman. A mother. A wife. And a venerable performer who gives her absolute all when on stage.

As speculation continues to swirl around the true motivation for the songs on her new album, "Lemonade," and who "Becky with the good hair" really is, Beyonce proves her only mission is to perform and entertain the people--unapologetically.

For those fans who missed Saturday night's show, earlier this week Beyonce announced the Formation World Tour will be making another stop in Houston on Sept. 22.
