Benefit held for HPD officer with stage 4 cancer

HOUSTON – Officer Norbert Ramon knows a thing or two about looking on the bright side.

"I've been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, but you know I try to put that behind me and be out here at work. These guys keep me going,” Ramon said.

The 24-year Houston Police Department veteran received national recognition for rescuing hundreds of people during Hurricane Harvey in despite of a terminal cancer diagnosis.

“I could’ve stayed at the office and answered phone calls, but I wanted to go out there and help,” Ramon said.

On Friday, some of his fellow officers organized an auction and cookout for their friend at the Houston Police Officers Union on State Street to raise money for Ramon’s cancer treatment.

“What they're doing for me here -- my brothers and sisters and blue -- I'm just overwhelmed by this,” Ramon said.

Ramon has continued to work while shuttling back and forth between Houston and Oklahoma every two weeks for chemotherapy treatments.

"I want to thank (everyone) for showing up and giving me the support. I mean, if I could thank everybody by hand, I wish I could. But golly, I'm just overwhelmed by this."
