Auto shop robbery caught on camera

Owner says suspects tried to run him over

GRANGERLAND, Texas - Cameras captured laid back thieves as they rob an auto shop Tuesday.

In the video, a passenger is seen reaching out to pet the owner's dog, while the driver is stealing cash inside the Grangerland shop.

It was just after 4 p.m. when the suspects pulled into Riley's Performance and Automotive in Montgomery County in a silver Pontiac Sunfire.

The unidentified man headed toward the shop, then stopped and talked to the owner's son about selling some power tools.

"As soon as I walk around the corner here, he bolts inside, pops open our money box where we keep our checks...steals two checkbooks and all the money inside," Jared Riley, the owner's son, said.

Moments after his father had returned to the shop and was told about the robbery, the car was spotted passing by.

John Riley, the shop's owner and a retired military veteran, tried to stop the car in a nearby convenience store. The driver reportedly tried to run him over as he fired several shots at the car.

Riley said he tailed them until they reached some railroad tracks and got away.

"We're struggling to survive right now with the economy and everything like that and we got to make payroll for the couple of employees we do have. That can be tough and he just made it tougher," said Riley.

Riley said the robber's silver Pontiac Sunfire was found abandoned at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Anyone who knows the suspect or recognizes the getaway vehicle is encouraged to call Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP.
