STAFFORD, Texas - A Fort Bend County man is headed to jail after investigators say he confessed to stabbing his wife to death.

It's a sad day for neighbors, and especially two teenagers, who live in Fort Bend County's Waterstone Place Apartments on the 500 block of Stafford Springs Avenue near Stafford.

Investigators said the children's father, Jair Rodriguez, confessed to stabbing their mother to death -- first when he called 911 around 6 p.m. Wednesday and then when deputies arrived.

"While conversing with the deputies the male did state that he got into an argument with his wife and ended up stabbing her to death," Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said.

The two teenagers were not home at the time of the incident, but neighbors said they spotted Rodriguez talking on the phone in the parking lot. That was around 1:30 in the afternoon. They said he seemed agitated.

"He was just kind of walking around here talking on his cell phone, looking around," Deena Neal said. "And just, it didn't feel right. Looked a little eerie."

The family was known to keep to themselves. Investigators said they're trying to determine what led up to the stabbing. They'll likely charge Rodriguez with murder. Either way, the stabbing has left two children with a deceased mother and a father headed to jail.

"How could you do that? Regardless of you not wanting to be with somebody or whatever the case may be," neighbor Samantha Morales said. "But now they have to continue life without a mother and that's hard."

Detectives have not yet released the name of the victim who was in her mid-40s.
