HOUSTON - An arsonist may have targeted a southwest Houston family because a family member lives as a cross-dresser.

The fire broke out at the Meadows of the Mews Apartments in the 2600 block of S. Dairy Ashford at Westheimer just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Family members said they were inside their home when they heard a knock on their door. When they answered it, the door was on fire.

When crews arrived on scene, they were able to put out the fire within four minutes, firefighters said.

The blaze caused heavy fire damage to two apartment units and smoke and water damage to six other units, firefighters said.

A woman and her nephew jumped out of a window to escape the flames. She told KPRC Local 2 that she believes they were targeted because her family member lives as a cross-dresser.

There were no reported injuries.

Approximately 60 firefighters responded to the incident.
