Alley Theatre reopens after Hurricane Harvey, just in time for holiday season

HOUSTON – The Alley Theatre reopens for the first time since Hurricane Harvey for its annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” along with its annual fundraiser “Deck the Trees.”

“I wanted it to be after Thanksgiving with my nieces and my son, so we can enjoy the day after Thanksgiving together,” Tanya Brooks said.

Nearly three months ago, floodwaters left much of the theater underwater, inundating the Newhaus theater and adjacent lobby along with the basement dressing rooms. Theater staff members have been working tirelessly ever since to bring the Alley back to life.

“It’s been a lot of hard work for our staff and contractors to get us where we are today. We are continuing to work hard below ground in our Newhaus to get it up and running,” Rachel Applegate with the Alley Theatre, said.

As a testament to their resolve, "Deck the Trees" will be the Alley’s biggest and best yet, with more trees than they’ve ever had before, along with some very special guests this evening. When Sherry Moore heard the theater was re-opening, she said it was important for her to be here.

“First time coming to the alley theater, seeing a "Christmas Carol" and our son is home from the military and we wanted to get a group picture of us,” Moore said.

The journey to get this far has not been any easy one, but the staff couldn't be more thrilled to have the theater up and running just in time for the busy holiday season.
