Accused Principal To Retire

Mabel Caleb Is Principal At Kashmere High School

HOUSTON - A Houston Independent School District principal is retiring amid a long list of accusations, and she's pointing the finger at the superintendent on her way out, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

Mabel Caleb was recently promoted to principal at Kashmere High School. Before that, she was the principal of Key Middle School.

Caleb has been accused of financial fraud, stealing the district's equipment and helping students cheat on the TAKS test.

The accusations surfaced earlier this year, after HISD said surveillance video showed employees moving equipment from Key Middle School. According to an HISD investigation, some of it ended up at Kashmere High School.

In her retirement letter, Caleb blames Superintendent Terry Grier. She said he investigated her because she attended a meeting where he was criticized.

"He blamed me for something I did not do and has called my almost 33-year career into question because he got his feelings hurt," she wrote. "This investigation is his personal attack on me because he misinterpreted my intentions."

The letter states Caleb's retirement is effective Aug. 31.

Grier can accept her resignation or move to fire her sooner.
