Abandoned baby found outside Pasadena medical facility

PASADENA, Texas - A newborn baby was found outside a Pasadena medical facility.

Noah Smith, an physician's associate at Bayside Urgent Care, 4001 Preston Ave., found the baby boy outside the building around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

"I got closer and I looked and there was a basket and a blanket," Smith said. "I opened, pulled back, the blanket and there was a baby."

Investigators said the baby was only a few hours old and was full-term.

"The eyes were slightly open," Smith said. "You could tell it was a newborn because it hadn't quite learned to focus yet."

Smith said the umbilical cord was pinched with a clip from a potato chip bag.

"I just thank God that we found him and nothing happened to him," Smith said.

The newborn was checked out at Bayshore Medical Center and was in good condition. Children's Protective Services took custody of the child.

Pasadena police said they will not pursue the baby's mother because she is protected under the state's Baby Moses Law, which allows parents of babies under 2 months old to leave their child at a safe place, such as a hospital or fire station, without consequences.

Authorities ask new parents leaving their baby at a safe haven to be sure that the child is left under someone's supervision instead of being left alone.
