Woman, 80, scammed by security system salesman

HOUSTON – An 80-year-old grandmother says an alarm company salesman came into her home and took advantage of her.

KPRC is not identifying the victim, but she explained what happened in an interview.

“I went to the door and he said he was here to update my security,” she said.

The victim alleges he told her he was there for a system update but really he was working for a completely different company. He ripped her key pad off the wall and removed other pieces of important equipment, she said. Then, he called her current alarm company to cancel the existing plan and that’s when he asked her to lie.

“He said, ‘Tell them your son is here, that’s me, I’ll talk to them,’” she explained. “He said ‘I’m her son,’”

The victim told KPRC the salesman forced her to sign a new, more expensive contract that was more than double her current one and ultimately left her with no security system at all.

She called the police and filed a report.

Investigators were able to identify the salesman from his license plate number that another neighbor wrote down.

Police are now looking for Marc Dunham, he reportedly lives in Arizona and works for Capital Connect Security Company which is based in Arizona.

The company’s CEO, Todd Johnson, confirmed to KPRC over the phone that Dunham is an employee. Johnson wasn’t aware of the allegations, he called back a short time later and informed Channel 2 he had just fired Dunham.

“This is embarrassing for us and not at all how we want to do business,” Johnson said.

He also told KPRC he plans to reach out to the victims and correct the situation.
