Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the single-story commercial building.

After firefighters attempted to enter the building, a decision was made to fight the fire from the building's exterior because of rapidly deteriorating conditions.

The North Montgomery County and Caney Creek fire departments were called to help.

The fire was declared under control around 9:15 a.m.

All occupants of the building were accounted for. Four people were displaced and four dogs died in the fire.

The Red Cross was called to help find shelter for the displaced residents.

One firefighter was treated for dehydration and released at the scene by Montgomery County Hospital District EMS.

The Conroe Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office has begun an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

Although originally a commercial structure, the building was home to the four displaced occupants.

Adjacent areas were in various stages of renovation into residential spaces.

No permit information was found on file with the city of Conroe for the construction. It appears that the fire originated in a portion of the building currently being used as a home.
