HOUSTON - Workers from the Texas Department of Transportation are installing blue Interstate 69 signs on the Southwest Freeway.

"This is one small part of a much larger, critical link connecting Texans from Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley all the way up through Texarkana," said Texas Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin, III.

"Interstate 69 is an essential component of our continued efforts to provide for safe, efficient travel and economic growth opportunities," Austin added.

TxDOT crews installed I-69 signs along 35 miles of U.S. 59, the Eastex Freeway in the north Houston area from I-610 the North Loop to near the Liberty County line in September 2012.

I-69 will ultimately become a 1,600-mile-long highway stretching from Michigan to Texas.
